What is hip hop dance?
Like many, you might be wondering what hip hop dance is all about or where it came from. Hip hop dance is a form of street dance that originated in the Bronx, New York, in the 1970s. It has since grown to include many different styles such as breaking, popping, locking, crumping, and whacking, to name but a few.
Hip hop is more than just a dance style though. It’s a culture rooted in historical and social African-American culture, including hip hop music. Hip hop is an art form that became a lifestyle. This is evident in people’s clothing, manner of speaking, expression, and movement.
What kind of music is hip hop usually danced to?
Well, this seems obvious, hip hop. Music with some rhythm and a distinctive bass is always popular to dance to. One of the 1st hip hop songs used for hip hop dancing was Rapper’s Delight by Sugarhill Gang. Since then, hip hop has grown and developed into a dance style for any music genre, including music previously seen as lyrical.

The premise is that children are taught the techniques needed to become professional dancers if they want to. A well thought out class will include exercises that explore the different styles of hip hop and improv.
What are the health benefits of hip hop dance?
Hip hop is an aerobic and anaerobic form of exercise. Thus, there’s an increase in heart rate, improving your kid’s cardiovascular health and fitness levels. An improvement in flexibility, coordination, balance, and posture enables and encourages healthy growth and development. Hip hop also strengthens your child’s core, arm, and leg muscles, improving bone and joint health. The psychological benefits of hip hop dance include building self-confidence and increasing self-esteem.
Is hip hop dance hard?
The good news is that hip hop’s basic steps are easy enough for most kids to learn. With a wide range of steps that vary in difficulty, hip hop dance classes are great for all. The steps range from easy beginner steps to advanced steps that we often see performed by professionals. The more challenging part of hip hop is learning and perfecting a routine. With lots of practice and guidance from a hip hop teacher, your child should be able to master this too.
What to wear to hip hop dance class?
It’s best to wear clothing that is comfortable to exercise in that does not restrict movement. In most instances, this includes loose-fitting pants and a comfortable casual shirt. There is no need for your kid to dress up for class; comfort is the main priority. Think sweatpants and a t-shirt or tank top.
The most important question here is what shoes to wear to hip hop dance class. There’s no need for special shoes like in other dance styles, but again, comfort is essential. Your child will need supportive athletic sneakers that provide both support and cushioning.
Hip hop dance is a high-impact activity, and having proper sneakers will protect the feet, ankles, and knees. Thus, they should avoid thin canvas shoes, slip-ons, other flimsy shoes, or shoes with black soles. Most studios prefer shoes with white soles or non-marking shoes since they don’t leave scuff marks on the floor.
How much is a hip hop dance class?
Three factors mainly determine the price:
- The length of the class. A class is usually between 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the age of your child.
- Group class or a private lesson. A one-on-one lesson is more expensive than group classes.
- The experience of the teacher. A teacher with more experience (and fame) usually charges more.
