Any advice to help me fall asleep at night?
< 1 min read
Falling asleep at night is a real challenge for me. Once I am asleep, I am usually able to get at least 6 hours of sleep in, but it can take me hours to fall asleep. What makes it even worse is how easily everyone else in the house manages to fall asleep. The longer I lie awake for, the busier my mind seems to get, making it even harder to doze off. When I do eventually fall asleep, it seems like only minutes have passed before my alarm wakes me. Some days I am so tired that I find myself dozing off at my desk. What techniques can I use to help me fall asleep? ![]() |

I have trouble shutting off my brain as well. I know lots of people will disagree with this but I love falling asleep to a good bit of trash TV. I have a few shows that I am familiar with so they arent too exciting or stimulating but that I really like (eg Friends and The Big Bang Theory) and I find that helps me stop thinking and fall asleep. Reading also works but when i am feeling really tired, I just go for my 'comfort TV' shows. I hope you find the thing that works for you :)

This is a great question. I'm always the last one to fall asleep in my house, too.
I have created a self-care ritual that I think helps. I find it really relaxing and something that I can do for myself. A few of my examples are gentle yoga poses, dry brushing, a warm shower, using a stone roller on my face, and a lavender lotion.
It's really hard to shut off my brain, but I think these little tasks help. Journaling is also another idea. It's a good place to jot down all of the things clogging up your brain.
Good luck!

Audio sleep stories for adults is one trick that seems to help insomniacs fall asleep. Here is a link to some sources that might interest you.

In addition, a noise or sound machine helps to drown out the little noises in the house that may interrupt sleep.
Relax in knowing that a good portion of adults have sleep troubles. Knowing that you are not alone decreases the pressure to try and sleep perfectly every night. As we get older, we no longer sleep like we once did. The more you stress about sleep disturbances, the worse it gets.

I am not any type of health care provider, so I would suggest talking with one you trust before taking any supplements.
A supplement of Valerian root and magnesium helps me get to sleep and stay asleep.
I also developed a nighttime routine of self-care to include good dental health and skin care, which helps me feel better about taking care of myself.
I use the Insight Timer app, specifically an hour-long sleep instrumental called Floating, which also helps with getting to sleep faster.
Something I have been looking into trying is a warm-air mister, which allows for essential oils to be added. I would choose lavender, sandalwood, or neroli for the oils.
