I have two children with ADHD with one being medicated and one not. It was a very difficult decision for my husband and I to agree to a medication by our son was a risk to himself and after a strong of severe injuries we agreed it was the best thing for him. Since then it has been nothing less than life changing for him. He has improved at school, made new friends and is smashing his goals in life.
My son who is not medicated is able to manage his ADHD by limiting how much sugar he eats and having a very consistent routine at home. Sleep is very important but can be difficult so a wind-down routine is essential for him. He also keeps a diary to help manage his organisation and we have been very strong with communication - helping him to be able to articulate his feelings and recognise when he is being impulsive or 'a bit much' for others.
Its such a deeply difficult decision to make. I agree that if it can be managed without medication then that is a very good thing but sometimes a medication can make so much difference to our kiddos as well. Best of luck!

I don't have medical or nutritional advice to give, but what I can say is that there are a lot of resources out there for families and children with ADHD. There is a lot out there that I don't think many people know exists. I think it's wonderful that you're seeking advice and tips for your grandkids. Being aware and proactive are two of the best things that you can do for your grandchildren.
If they haven't asked already, the school may be able to offer support and guidance within their own environment. Outside of school, it's worth checking out different social media platforms for support as well. I think knowing that you aren't alone is one of the biggest things when dealing with children with special needs. Within those social media platforms, you might be able to see if there are local support groups, playgroups, etc. for your family.
I've also found this site to be a great resource for ADHD information. I hope you find the answers to your questions!
