The social media space plays a significant role in most teenagers lives. At the same time, many online spaces are not very well moderated or monitored. Do you have any tips for teaching your teenager to navigate these spaces responsibly? Do they know how to spot fake news, report online bullying, and engage with others in a positive manner? ![]() |

Well, my kids are aged 13 and 9 and these are the age when they are all hooked up with their gadgets. They’d forget about chores and their school lessons once they have their gadgets in their hands. It is really annoying especially if their tasks are not completely done.
I know that even if I take their gadgets, we will just be all stressed out and it happened a lot of times already. So, we come up with a schedule and they should abide by it by hook or by crook. They are not allowed to use any gadgets during school days and they have monitored screen time when they are off school.
An important thing is, that they must surrender their gadgets before going to bed. It will ensure that they won’t be tempted to go to websites or platforms that are prohibited while we (mom and dad) are sleeping. I also check their gadgets from time to time in their presence.
The most important thing perhaps is, explaining why we as parents are very vigilant about them being techy. They might not really understand where we are coming from but, the time will come that they will do and they will be thankful that we stood our ground.

I wish I had more concrete answers for you, but my kids are little...however, this is one of my biggest fears as they get older. My young ones are clueless but know enough to throw out the "post this on Instagram" comment every once in a while and it drives me nuts. (We don't post pics of the kids on social media, anyways!)
Have you thought about having your teenager watch The Social Dilemma? Sometimes I find that documentaries and visual examples are better with teenagers rather than lecturing or having them "read up" on internet safety. This particular documentary is extremely eye-opening when it comes to your own privacy and social media. It might be a little bit of a scare tactic, but the information is very interesting. It would be something good to watch together and start the conversation about the internet and social media.
