Weighted blankets – yes or no?
< 1 min read
I have heard great feedback from parents with children with sensory sensitivities when it comes to weighted blankets. It seems as if they are great for calming an overstimulated nervous system. If you have any experience using these blankets for teens or adults who experience anxiety I would love to hear your experiences. Do you think they are helpful, or is there another product you would recommend? ![]() |

My daughter and her children love their weighted blankets. She ordered a lighter weigh for her children and one of the heavier blankets for herself. She swears by them and thinks they really help soothe her children and herself. She ordered whatever was the cheapest on Amazon and is very happy with the result.
Personally, the lighter the comforter, the better for me. I have been given many beautiful hand-quilted comforters that I find too heavy and make me uncomfortable to sleep. I go for a lightweight down comforter and keep my feet out.
It may be best to try a weighted blanket first before buying them for the whole family. If you can borrow one, even better to test out your response.

Weighted blankets are not necessarily effective for everyone. In fact for some children and adults these can be quite unpleasant and uncomfortable.
Children and teens with sensory issues are usually hyper or hypo sensitive to certain stimulation. For example one child might be hyper sensitive to auditory stimuli and he can get irritated or disturbed from a very low volume music. On the contrary if a child is hypo sensitive to auditory stimuli his reaction to sounds is going to be different.
Similarly I have seen children who simply cannot bear any thick or textured fabric touching their body. They are very sensitive to touch and pressure, weighted blanket is not a thing for them.
On the other hand there are children who seek pressure or weight around their body because it makes them feel calm. For these kids weighted blankets and weighted jackets are very suitable. But again, you have to very carefully select how much weight is suitable for the kid. Occupational therapists can be very helpful in selecting a weighted blanked for a specific child.
