What are some unique first birthday celebration ideas?
< 1 min read
My third child is turning one soon. We have an incredible group of friends that would love to celebrate her. I feel like it’s also a great opportunity for us to see friends we haven’t seen in a while because of the pandemic. Also, with the timing, her birthday is a great way to welcome warmer weather. What are some alternative birthday party ideas or celebrations? I’m not really interested in inviting a bunch of people into our home quite yet. It would mostly just be chaos! I’d love to hear some ideas on how we can celebrate my daughter and the community our family has become a part of. ![]() |

I'm not sure if this would be interesting to you but I love art-themed parties. Maybe for a one year old, a onesie paint party could be fun! It can be outside at the park. Just get some fabric paints and order a giant box of plain white onesies and have everyone design their own gift. You can even get some larger ones as well maybe for the next few growth spurts so they can be wearing friend and family created onesies for the whole 1st year! Ask your friends to bring some supplies as well, if they have them, and maybe see if someone can bring finger paints for the littler kids and have them paint some art for the one-year-old's room? We did this for my nephew and it was a blast!

Congratulations on your little one! So exciting!
I love outdoor parties and get togethers and for my daughter's 1st birthday, we organised a 'glistening', Its the equivalent of a christening and honouring godparents except without the religious belief. My friend actually had both a glistening and christening! We asked an aunty and uncle to be my daughter's 'guide' parents and they were invited to make a brief welcome to the world speech. We had glitter (eco-friendly!), picnic rugs and cushions and sparkly decorations set up in a leafy park. We also had a cake smash and each guest bought some homemade food. It was such a fun and memorable way to celebrate the day.

Congratulations on your little one's upcoming birthday! As we all know, 1st Birthday celebrations are really for the adults, so maybe a lovely picnic at your favourite park or sports field would provide the ideal space to celebrate the wonderful community of friends and family you have. Kids will have space to run around, and adults could safely mingle in an airy outdoor space.
You can have small party packs with some candy or other treats for the kids (or the young at heart) and depending on the size of the group, you can ask each friend to bring a favourite dish to share. There are plenty of child friendly traditional party games that can keep older kids entertained, and if there are a lot of younger kids, you could consider hiring an entertainer or face painter for the day.
If you would like to have some photographic opportunities to capture the festivities, you could set up a small photo booth with some fun props. You could also consider a cake smash photo shoot for your daughter. This is a wonderful, fun, and messy way to capture the joy and curiosity of this milestone.

Celebrating outside is so much easier when it comes to birthday parties. There are so many great outdoor party ideas that range from simple to rather involved.
Since the party is for a 1-year old, I would imagine that keeping it simple would be the best way to go. Don't stress out about too many details, as the child will only be able to participate in a few low-level activities at her age.
I suggest that you focus on "picture opportunities" to make cute and lasting memories. Have a central focus area with a colorful backdrop and adorable decorations around the high chair. Have another photo op area for opening presents.
Keeping with a theme will make for gorgeous pictures. Then go off of this theme for 1 or 2 simple games or crafts with coordinating decor. One-year-olds love balloons, so a balloon drop will be fun (until they start popping and the tears start). Music is a favorite for little ones, so perhaps a dance party with prizes could be fun.
Keep the food simple and, if you can, in the same theme as the rest of the party.
Remember a tent in case of rain, so you do not have to make arrangements to move inside at the last minute.
The trick is to not go overboard with extravagant plans, causing stress, which will ruin the party for both of you. Prepare what you can ahead of time so that you can enjoy every second of this sweet girl's celebration.
