There are loads of books out there about parenting but the bulk of them tend to focus on pregnancy and the early years. What are the best books about parenting older children and teens? ![]() |

I love teenagers and I love books! Having worked with teens for almost 20 years, I've come across some really great ones. I have always tended to lean towards advising parents to read the books written for teens, if they want help in parenting their teen. Get in their world, and read something they would relate to. The books intended for parents are all great, too!
The Life Skills for Teens book, by Karen Harris, is one of my favorites, as well. Packed with relevant, practical, and quick-to-read hints and tips, it's a handy reference book for teens.
Also, in this same category as life skills, but for a little younger age group, the book How to Be A Person, by Catherine Newman, is packed full of nifty little skills your pre-teen needs to learn.
The Adulting 101 series, by Josh Burnette, is all about becoming your best adult you by learning what it means to be responsible for your time and talents. Incorporating finances, work ethics, and civics, it encourages teens to begin to look outside of themselves to others, to develop a leadership mindset.
And finally, my favorite book for teens is Eat That Frog! Student's Edition, by Brian Tracy. Especially helpful for busy students, and overachievers, this time management book helps teens identify what they dislike doing the most, and helps them understand why they need to do that thing first, in order to succeed everyday. It talks through procrastination and learning how to singletask. In this multitasking world, it's one of the least taught, but best skills, a young adult needs to learn.
Happy reading and guiding!

I believe the best way to parent teens is to empower them and equip them with the right set of skills to live in a digital world.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey is a very good book which should be read by parents while their kids are younger so they can provide conducive environment for their children. Teens should also read this book to evaluate themselves and plan a self-development journey.
Life Skills for Teens by Karen Harris is another good book it guides the teens in learning different life skills including cooking, managing money, fixing car, cleaning etc. This book can be a very good gift for your teen.

Working in this field with teens, I find the most engaging and evidence-based parenting books are:
Dan Siegel - Parenting from the inside, Mindful parenting and No drama discipline. Also Collaborative Problem Solving by Dr Ross Greene is a great book/podcast that looks at both behaviour in the classroom and parenting teens.
