What are the best period products?
< 1 min read
I have recently had to write an article about a wonderful NPO who make reusable sanitary towels. These products are a game changer not only for girls and women in lower-income communities, but also for women who are trying to make more environmentally conscious choices about their feminine hygiene wear. An acquaintance of mine is looking at making small gift boxes to present to girls who have just started their period (or whose period seems imminent) but she has remarked that there are so many products available now in comparison to just a few years ago – there are the traditional pads (sanitary towels) and tampons, reusable sanitary towels, moon cups, and period panties. She would like to be able to include one or two products that are suitable for girls age 9-13 who are in this stage of their lives. If you have teen girls – especially if they are busy and active – which of these products would you suggest my friend include? Apart from the sanitary products, she is also going to include a small beanbag or hot water bottle, a pair of warm socks, and a chocolate – as well as a brochure explaining the female menstrual cycle in easy to understand terms. ![]() |

I have a 10 year old daughter and decided to 'road test' some of the period undies you can buy before she has a need for managing her own period in the next few years. Oh my goodness I absolutely love them. I purchased the Bonds brand ones and have found them to be so amazing. I wish they were around when I was a young girl and just starting my period. I have spoken to many other mothers as well who think they are fabulous for their daughters. You can even get ones designed for swimming.
From the mums that I know, many of their daughters will use a reusable or disposable sanitary pad over the period undies to school in the morning and then removed the pad mid-day and just use the undies for the rest of the day. I have tried this myself and it works well. I plan on also buying my daughter some reusable panty liners and pads as well as the undies but I can't rate them highly enough.
