My nephews are 9-years old and both enjoy reading independently. My sister takes them to the library regularly but says that it can sometimes be difficult to find suitable books for them, as many books seem to be either for older or younger readers, or have themes that appeal more to girls.
Their 10th birthday is coming up soon and I’m hoping to put together a nice selection of books for them to enjoy now. I know that there are some great book series out there, but it’s been a while since I’ve done book shopping for kids of this age.
What books are winners in your house? I’d love some book recommendations from parents with children ages 9-12.

oh my gosh I love this question!!. I am obsessed with books and find it hard that my kids don't seem as interested as I am in books. My 8-12 year old kiddos seem more into non-fiction books at the moment. They are loving reading about things like the Titanic and natural disasters etc. Im am still looking for fiction that they will enjoy so look forward to reading all of the comments here :)
I agree with the Harry Potter series along with The Chronicles of Narnia!
In addition, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen are favorites for boys and girls who enjoy an adventure. Our grandson enjoys having an adult read these books to him before bed.
Even if some of these books are possibly a bit difficult for this age group, the content is intriguing and furthers the joy of reading if read to as a quiet activity. I know that when teachers read chapter books out loud to their students, it is a special time. I still remember this activity fondly as a student.
My niece is an avid reader of the Harry Potter series but she also enjoys a mix of genres as well.
Matilda by Roald Dahl, The BFG and Charlotte's Web are some of her favourite stories, also my favourites too! In terms of other series, she really enjoys The Chronicles of Narnia as a favourite and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. There are so many more series out there now so I'm sure there will be a lot of great recommendations out there!
My kid was obsessed from about age 9-11 with the Wings of Fire Series. They are wonderful books about dragons. He would tell anyone he met to read them and he got a few of his friends hooked as well. there are 14 main books and a few side books as well. Plus they have about 4 graphic novels for the first 4 books, which is a wonderful gateway. We also love the Lemony Snickett's A Series of Unfortunate Events books.
The Harry Potter series teaches kids so much about friendship, loyalty, fighting for what's right, and how to accept your own flaws, but never accept you can't be better.
The Smithsonian has a set of books which are visually stunning and full of knowledge kids will enjoy learning.
DK Children's books are always a hit with kids, covering a wide variety of subjects, and filled with tons of great pictures.
For more fiction series, we love Rick Riordan, James Dashner, C. S. Lewis, Cressida Cowell, and John Grisham's Theodore Boone series.
